This major monograph traces Giovanni Rizzoli's artistic research, from his first works in the late 1980s to his most recent creations. A leading exponent of the generation of artists of the 1990s, Giovanni Rizzoli expresses his creative universe in sculptures, paintings and drawings with a strong lyrical and evocative power. His work is a constant reflection - modulated through a variety of expressive languages - on the history of art and the need to be current, to capture the spirit of the times. Attention to detail, the never random choice of materials, the study of forms and iconographic sources are some of the characteristics of Rizzoli's research, motivated by the impulse to redefine contemporary artistic language. The exploration of new plastic possibilities is combined in Rizzoli's work with the poetry and amazement that the artist discovers in front of beauty. Time and infinity, pleasure and pain, faith and knowledge, eros and thanatos, philosophical concepts are transformed into sometimes painful sometimes joyful images full of references, in recognisable but often imaginary forms. Parallel to his sculptural research, since the early 1990s Rizzoli has flanked what he defines as objective painting, a series of abstract ‘paintings’ made with the use of drip on fabric upholstery.
