On the ninetieth anniversary of its founding, this volume celebrates one of the most important and influential schools of art and architecture, active from 1919 to 1933.
The Bauhaus, founded and directed in Weimar by Walter Gropius, then by Hannes Meyer and Mies van der Rohe, among others, was distinguished by a teaching method based on the belief that all disciplines should be unified in a single synthesis of art, craftsmanship and technology, as the foundation of a new cultural unity. Among the most illustrious teachers were Paul Klee and Vasily Kandinsky, as well as Albers, Moholy-Nagy, Schlemmer and Feininger. In 1925, the Bauhaus moved to Dessau, before being definitively suppressed in 1933 by the Nazi regime, which exiled many of the artists involved. However, its impact on European and American artistic and architectural trends in the years that followed remained very strong.
