Recently and beautifully restored rooms display masterpieces of ancient art, such as the famous metopes from the temples of Selinunte. The “Antonino Salinas” Archaeological Museum in Palermo is the oldest and most important public museum institution on the island, formed as early as 1814. Fully restored in structure and exhibition, the museum offers the possibility to admire the famous metopes of the temples of Selinunte, considered the most important sculptural complex of Greek art in the West. The museum also preserves the so-called Palermo Stone, with hieroglyphic inscriptions of capital importance for the reconstruction of the history of ancient Egypt. The guide testifies to the new layout with the creation of the third courtyard “the new agora of the Salinas” where the monumental pediment of Temple C of Selinunte and the extraordinary sculptural complex of the lion's eaves of the temple of Himera have found their place.
